Lung has been unanimously elected Tutu of Kuangtung to carry on the Government. With a view to the maintenance of order in this district General Lung has no option but to accede to the request of the people. He accordingly proclaimed independence on the 6th instant and has given instructions to all civil and military authorities to give thorough protection to all foreigners in the province.

Chinese in the employ of the Military Intelligence Department state that Lung has only nominally declared independence while waiting for strong reinforcements from the Central Government, and that Chinese gunboats, now in Hongkong, are here by his orders. The officers on the gunboats are anxious to have British Police (Chinese Section) placed on board to prevent real revolutionaries coming on board for this purpose of tampering with the crews which is a daily

Occurrence.

The week-end 8th/11th April was marked by two incidents in Chinese territory near the frontier.

About 5 p.m. on Friday the 7th a band of 70 or 80 robbers surrounded the village of Wan Ha, Deep Bay. The robbers searched about 100 houses and in addition to material plunder, they carried off 33 persons. Six managed to escape but the pirates embarked with the remaining 27 and sailed off to Chekwan Bay about 7 p.m. The villagers report that the pirates belonged to Macao and Sal Ho. Police patrols were sent out but no trace could be found of the raiding junk.

On the 9th instant the police reported that about 700 rebels were at Po Kat, 4 miles from Shạm Chan. Another report was to the effect that there were 300 robbers or rebels at Sha Wan, 8 miles north of Sham Chan. About 11.45 a.m. on the 10th
